Obesity & the Role of Senior Care

Jun 1, 2018 by Alan White

Although many attempts have been made to promote healthier living, obesity is still a big problem in the United States. Based on statistics, the United States is one of the most obese countries in the world. It is even estimated that up to one-third of U.S. adults are obese.

Explaining Obesity

Obesity can be explained by using the Body Mass Index (often called BMI), which measures body fat in relation to height and weight. An average person will typically fall in the 19 – 25 range, while people who have BMI of 30 or above are usually characterized as being obese.

This is dangerous because the risk of diseases, specifically cardiovascular, increases with higher BMI. In addition to that, extra weight severely limits mobility and puts unneeded stress on the joints, causing pain and discomfort.

Recommended Weight Loss Solutions from Senior Care Experts

While obesity is indeed a big problem for seniors, there are several weight loss solutions that are proven to help drop unhealthy weight. Just like with any lifestyle change, your loved one should talk to his or her doctor or in home senior care provider before adopting any of these solutions.

  • Healthy Diet – Try eating fruits and vegetables instead of unhealthy snacks full of sugar and salt. Eating smaller portions and watching the caloric intake can also help immensely.

  • Daily Exercise – When it comes to exercise, it’s all about raising that heart rate and burning those calories. It doesn’t have to be anything too extensive; just some simple aerobic exercises for half an hour each day will do the trick.

  • Strength Training – Because muscle tissue burns calories faster than fat tissue, this is an effective way to drop some weight. Using free weights on different muscle groups a few times a week can go a long way in losing excess weight.

The health and activity of your loved one should take center stage when it comes to your priorities, especially if he or she is already overweight. Helping our loved one follow the mentioned steps can greatly improve his or her life and provide hope for a happy and healthy future.
