Caregiver Spotlight: Maria Vega

May 7, 2018 by Alan White

At Comfort Keepers of Cumming, our caregivers work hard every day to provide older adults with fantastic support in the comfort of their own homes. Today we are shining our spotlight on another stellar caregiver: Maria Vega. We interviewed Maria about her career, and what it’s like to work with Comfort Keepers.

Home care wasn’t where Maria started her work. She actually worked in the retail industry for over 10 years, “I always liked helping people, but I was in the wrong business. It was not what I wanted to do”. After working and saving money, Maria was accepted to the Chattahoochee Technical College where she is currently earning her LPN.

How does Maria succeed as a caregiver in Cumming, GA?

“I wanted to get a little bit of a feel of what it is like to work in the field,” she told us, “I like being able to help – to help other people that aren’t able to help themselves. It’s a great feeling at the end of the day. I am passionate about that.”

When we asked Maria what she liked the most about working as a caregiver, she was very confident with her response: “The best part is that you get to make an impact on people. People that I wouldn’t meet unless I was on this path.”

Maria told us that her dream job was to work as a licensed nurse. After she receives her LPN, she will look towards earning an RN diploma and then an APRN, so she can work in psychiatric nursing – helping patients with disabilities like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Lewy Body Dementia. In her words, “It can take a long time. Eventually I’ll get there.”

Maria also gave some great advice for caregivers who want to succeed with Comfort Keepers. “Learn the situation of the person you are going to care for. How can you help them? Get really into it. Don’t just show up,” That is a great response. Thank you, Maria.

A fun fact about Maria is that she loves making art! She told us that she uses painting and crafting to express herself. She was also kind enough to send over a picture of her art. Check it out!

We would like to extend another big thank you to Maria for talking with us, and for her hard work as a Comfort Keeper caregiver! If you would like to become a Comfort Keeper, please view our job openings and get in touch!
