It’s Not Unusual for Home Caregivers to Feel Unappreciated

Nov 8, 2018 by Alan White

It is not unusual to feel burned out and unappreciated when caring for an older adult.  The services provided by home caregivers are constant and often expected not just by the elderly but often by their family members as well.  Although care providers expect the job to be demanding, they also hope to reduce the unrealistic expectations. Caregivers are only human and they, just like your parent and yourself, have feelings too.

Be Mindful of Illnesses

Although family caretakers cannot always expect older adults like your mother or father to perceive your emotions, it is important to remember that most seniors being cared for either are chronically ill or are suffering from some form of memory lapse.  If chronic illness is the issue most likely pain or anxiety emotionally has changed their persona, and it may be difficult for them to relate to someone else’s feelings when all they want is to have someone stop their pain.  When it comes to memory issues such as dementia, it takes specialized training and the development of a unique relationship to communicate between the client and their home caregivers.

Help Others as Thanks

When choosing to provide care, you have selected to devote a great part of your life to the one you are caring for whether that be a loved one or a client.  However, it is important to learn how to balance your life and appreciate what you are doing for others and accept that as your recognition in kind.  You cannot expect your mother or father to thank you, or the elderly gentleman who lost his wife and has dementia.  Even the older gentlemen’s children are grieving and may not have the words or the expressive way to inform you.

Make Sure to Rest

Learn to celebrate life and enhance the moments of life.  Good home caregivers don’t need to be told they are good; they know they are good.  They reward themselves and take the appropriate respite time.  If you are feeling unappreciated as a home care provider, it may be time to take a step back and refocus on your goals. Caregivers deserve to receive a helping hand and be loved as well!
